I'm a native French speaker who taught herself English
and built an entire life in New Zealand.

And I won't pretend it was easy.

To smile and nod when you've understood nothing.
To watch a pun fly over your head
and feel that quiet sting of not quite belonging.
Even when my English was technically fluent.
Because fluency and belonging are not the same thing. You can know every word and still feel like a stranger in the language.
That gap, between knowing and truly inhabiting, is exactly what I've spent 10 years understanding.
